‘The right to radio. 100 years of radio - 25 years of ORANGE 94.0’ Book presentation and disussion

On World Radio Day, 13 February 2025, we cordially invite you to our book presentation ‘Das Recht auf Radio. 100 years of radio - 25 years of ORANGE 94.0’. When did radio begin as a new electronic medium and how did it become popular? What was the workers' radio movement and how did radio go from being an open hobby apparatus with the utopia of the world receiver to a closed authoritarian piece of furniture? Why was there a radio monopoly in Austria until the late 1990s and who were the radio pirates in Vienna? How was Free Radio ORANGE 94.0 founded, which is now the largest community radio station in the German-speaking world?

The history of radio is told in the newly published book from the perspective of civil society and expands the 100 years of radio history and the big anniversary round dance to include the pirate movements and the struggles for free broadcasting frequencies and plurality of opinion.

Radio remains an important medium for bringing music to the people. The music programming on community radios is characterized by the search for new sounds, diversity, and the goal of making niches more audible. Community radios aim to provide a platform for music and musicians who receive little or no airplay on commercial and public broadcasters.

A radio station's music database is a powerful tool for implementing these objectives. Its design plays a key role in determining what is ultimately heard on the radio. The study provides an overview of who decides which tracks are added to a radio's music archive, who is involved in the selection process, and how radio producers gain access to it. This is the first time these perspectives have been presented in an overview. The situation at the Vienna-based community radio ORANGE 94.0 was analyzed in comparison with other examples in Austria and abroad.
